MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama voters will largely be on the sidelines as Democrats and Republicans battle for control of Congress. No Democrat or independent decided to take on Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions. Alabama's other senator, Republican Richard Shelby, isn't up for re-election.

DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - Experts say cotton and peanut farmers in southeast Alabama need rain soon to improve yields after a dry summer. Most of the state's Wiregrass region has been classified "abnormally dry" and that means some crops are wilting throughout the area.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A federal judge has denied a request to expand a lawsuit filed by former students who say they were sexually molested by a long-time teacher. U.S. District Judge Virginia Hopkins recently ruled against a request for class-action status. The judge says the lawsuit against former Shelby County teacher Daniel Acker and the school board can still continue and others can be filed pursuing individual claims.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Police say a man is in critical condition following a late-night shooting at a Birmingham park. Officers were called to George Ward Park in the city's Glen Iris neighborhood last night. Birmingham police Sgt. B. Shelton says the officers found a man with a gunshot wound to his head.

    Heat and humidity continue

    Saturday, August 30 2014 3:51 PM EDT2014-08-30 19:51:05 GMT
The bulk of the rain has been well to our west today and will stay that way for the duration of tonight and tomorrow. We'll only see an isolated shower or storm the next few days due to most of the tropical moisture lifting well north of us. That's all due to an area of low pressure in the upper Midwest that is sucking it all north. This will leave us on the warm and humid side of things, which is why isolated showers and storms are in the forecast the next few days.
