2nd Lt. Michael Rose and 2nd Lt. John Bergman won the 31st annual Best Ranger Competition at Fort Benning. Over the course of the competition, each Ranger covered up to 75 miles with little or no sleep.

Of the original 50 teams to begin the competition, only 26 made it into the final day of competition. 18 teams were eliminated due to medical reasons and 6 didn’t make the cut Friday night following the foot march event.

The three-day Best Ranger Competition has been compared to Ironman and Eco-Challenge competitions. The competition challenges two-man Ranger teams in events that test their physical conditioning, Ranger skills and team strategies. The events are purposely scheduled back-to-back and around the clock for 60 hours, allowing little time for rest and meals.

“It shows the will and determination of Army Rangers,” said former Army Ranger Wayne Barth who was visiting with his grandsons from Charlotte. “Their ability to withstand hardship and accomplish a mission in any circumstance, regardless of what they're faced with, is incredible.”

Rose and Bergman, of the 25th Infantry Division, were in second place heading into the final day and finished strong. After a weekend of jumping out of helicopters, zip lining and other difficult obstacle courses; many were impressed with all the teams that were able to complete the grueling weekend.

“For us civilians to be able to come out and watch this and cheer them on, it's very, very special,” said Rob Barnett, a father-in-law of one of the Best Ranger participants. “It makes us proud of our military forces.”

“It’s very fun, we're having a great time. We feel like we're working right aside with them,” said Patti Looney, a mother of one of the Best Ranger participants.

The National Guard team came in 2nd despite leading after the first and second day. The 75th Ranger Regiment team came in 3rd. The teams will be honored at an awards ceremony on Monday.
