It wasn't the sky, but 18th Avenue that opened up Saturday evening and let the water come raining down.
“Oh here we go again,” laughed Debra Menefee. “Here we go again!”
Menefee has lived on 18th Avenue since 1980. She could see the water from her front porch, and she's seen that kind of mess before.
“This is about the third time in about six to seven months, about the third time,” she said.
Within that time, a portion of the street has also been paved. Fire crews had to break through that new pavement Saturday to keep the water from spreading to nearby homes.
As it was, the water came within inches of front doorways and motor vehicles.
“I’m a little concerned,” Menefee confessed. “I’m concerned about the water. It bothers me to see. My other concern is sinkholes.”
Those concerns are only made worse by the visibly sunken pavement that had water oozing out of it Saturday.
“The other two times before, it happened right before I went to work. So I didn't have a chance to talk with them,” Menefee said. “This time, I’m here and no one's said anything to me yet.”
Menefee could only sit back and watch the water go by, but she hoped this time the final result would be different.
“Whatever it is, fix it and just let us know,” she smiled. “We like to be informed.”
According to Stacy Barnes, Superintendent of System Services with Columbus Water Works, the broken water line is an original line. He said workers would be out Sunday and Monday to re-evaluate the line and the road to determine if the line should be replaced.
