Caregivers from over 30 states and one from Ireland came to Americus learn about new ways to help others.

This year is the first annual Caregiver National Summit at Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus.

The Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving is putting on the summit to help caregivers learn about new ways to do their job.

But caregivers will also learn how to take care of themselves.

And former first lady Rosalynn Carter knows that's key.

“I just want caregivers to know that it's very important to take care of themselves and caregivers feel so guilty even if they leave someone for a few minutes or if they're long distance and I want to know not to feel guilty because their own life is very important,” says former First Lady Rosalynn Carter.

The summit will go through Friday and there are more than 200 caregivers attending.

Rosalynn Carter says she knows how it feels to be a caregiver because she took care of her father, mothers and brother when they were ill.
