Columbus Firefighters are trying to figure out who torched 11 cars over the past five days.News 3 On Your Side
The first arsons happened last week near the Historic District. Then this weekend - across town- cars were set on fire near the main campus of Columbus State University.
Asst. Chief Greg Lange says that the person or people who are setting these fires have the same MO. Right now they're trying to pinpoint what exact accelerant they used - in the meantime the victims say - they're on guard.
Peggy is one of the victims. She asked us not to use her last name. She lives in Mohina Woods neighborhood and her family are two cars short today.
She says, “You go to bed and you think everything's safe. You wake up and there's a fire in your backyard.”
And she's not the only one who got the wake-up call. If you drive up and down the streets of Mohina Woods neighborhood, you'll see torched cars some were a total loss others were salvaged in the midst the meltdown.
Arson investigators are trying to figure out - who they are. They say the arsonists have been hitting neighborhoods like this over the past week - using an accelerant to torch cars in the middle of the night. They don't have any strong leads but they're on guard.
And they’re working with Columbus Police to step up patrols in the area.
And even though she knows investigators are on it - Peggy says she and her neighbors are also on the lookout.
Says Peggy, “People are really watching. Neighbors are sleeping lighter.” Hoping this hot streak of crime will come to an end.
Peggy says she and her neighbors - most of whom were also victims have decided they are going to get together a neighborhood watch group and according to Columbus Fire Department - that is the best defense.
