Columbus State University students celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with an art exhibit today.

The university showcased the work of Dr. Adalbelio Garcia.

The collection is called "The Hispanic Contribution towards the Independence of The United States of America."

Students and community members learned how Hispanics played a part in US history and independence through maps, letters, and other historic documents.

“If you don't have a conscience of your contribution to this country you just come here to get as much as you can and go home,” says Dr. Garcia.

Dr. Garcia says that it is crucial that Hispanics and non Hispanics realize the role Hispanics had in the history of The United States.

With that knowledge, he says people have a sense of belonging to the country.
