In a press conference that just wrapped up at about 11:30 a.m., Columbus Mayor Jim Wetherington announced he issued a very serious letter of reprimand to Fire Chief Jeff Meyer.

Click here to read the letter

The reprimand involves several incidents at the department, including one involving former Columbus firefighter Zack Allen.

Zack Allen is the son of a Columbus city councilmember. According to Mayor Jim Wetherington, Allen was in a car accident in a city vehicle, while he worked for Columbus Fire and EMS in November 2006.

Since late last year, the city has been investigating the matter.

Wetherington said no favoritism was shown. Allen is the son of a city councilman. However, Wetherington said mistakes were made. Still, he said there is no criminal responsibility.

Wetherington said Meyer has some management issues. The fire chief was not at the press conference. Wetherington said he had a meeting with Meyer this morning.

The mayor is giving Meyer an opportunity to handle the specific cases. The fire chief now has the task of determining who is responsible for the mishandling of the cases involved. And it will be up to Meyer to handle those cases.

It was good that the Chief was reprimanded but more should have been done for his incompetence and mis-management. And I feel that the Mayor needs a reprimand for lying about no favoritism was shown. Drugs is a crime, the councilmembers son committed a crime, under the influence...allowed to resign. Far as the mayor, he needs to resign

YEP - IT'S BUSINESS AS USUAL. THE ELECTED POLITICIANS ARE DUMPING ON THOSE BELOW THEM. ELECTED OFFICIALS IN COLUMBUS WERE AWARE OF THIS SITUATION BUT BECAUSE IT WAS THE SON OF A PROMINENT ELECTED POLITICIAN, HEADS WERE TURNED IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. THE OUTGOING MAYOR AS WELL AS WETHERINGTON AS WELL AS THE CITY MANAGER WERE AWARE OF THESE SITUATIONS AND HOPED IT WOULD NEVER COME TO THE ATTENTION OF THE PUBLIC. WELL IT DID - AND LOOK HOW THEY RUN TO BLAME SOMEONE ELSE. POLITICIANS - WISH THEY WERE A BETTER GROUP THAN THEY ARE.

I live in Savannah, but I have followed my brother's ordeal for many months. Jeff is a person of great integrity and love for every citizen of of Columbus. He honors his superiors, and I know that he respects the decision of the Mayor. More importantly, Jeff is a fair person, and is a champion for those who work hard. This is why he is a good leader. All leaders make mistakes, but great leaders learn from them and use them to better serve the public good. My brother is a great leader. More importantly, he is a great person who will continue to put the safety and goodwill of the people of Columbus as his first priority. Any person of integrity that knows him would agree.
