Surgical Technology Instructor and Lead Advisor for the School of Health Sciences, Donna Emmons, has been named the “Rick Perkins Instructor of the Year” for Columbus Technical College for 2008-2009. The Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Instruction honors the Technical College System of Georgia’s most outstanding instructors. Nominees are chosen by fellow instructors and/or department heads.

As the winner for Columbus Technical College, Donna has earned a coveted reserved parking spot for one year, plus a check for $500 from the Columbus Technical College Foundation. There were three other finalists for the award: Susan Hollingsworth/Early Childhood Education Program Manager, Dr. Stephen White/English and Speech Instructor and John Lipham/Major Appliance Technology Program Manager. Each finalist received a check for $200.

Of the award Donna said, “Being nominated by my peers is an incredible honor. I’m humbled to have won this award and to be in the company of the other finalists. They are dedicated and well-known instructors. I will do my best to represent the School of Health Sciences and Columbus Technical College during my tenure as the Rick Perkins Instructor of the Year.”

This July will mark Donna Emmons’ sixth year as an instructor with Columbus Technical College. She will compete against winners from Georgia’s other technical colleges at a statewide Rick Perkins Award competition September 9 – 11 in Augusta. The state winner will serve as Georgia’s ambassador for technical education for the year. He or she will also earn a $1,000 grand prize and will make many appearances on behalf of the Technical College System of Georgia, including an address to the Georgia General Assembly.

The Rick Perkins Award has been a state-wide event since 1991 and was formerly known as the Commissioner’s Award of Excellence. It was renamed the Rick Perkins Award in memory and honor of Thomas “Rick” Perkins, an instructor at West Central Technical College, who received the Commissioner’s Award of Excellence prior to his untimely death.
