Tuesday marks the sixth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.  Several communities in and around the valley area are holding services on that day.

  • Freedom Walk
    5 p.m. Eastern
    Steward Field at Fort Benning

Walkers, rollers, and strollers are encouraged to gather and remember those who lost their lives and those who protect us today.

The event is sponsored by Operation Homefront-Georgia.

For more information, call (800) 390-2115 or email georgia@operationhomefront.net.

  • September 11 Remembrance Day
    9 a.m. – 8:15 p.m.
Cunningham Center at Columbus State University

This is a communitywide, daylong event featuring educational displays and public safety exhibits, as well as videos and artifacts from Ground Zero.

The event will honor the victims of the attacks of September 11, 2001, while educating the community about the many subsequent measures in place to prevent or counteract a potential, similar tragedy.

Musical performances are from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. by the following high school ensembles: Spencer (band), Jordan (chorus), Northside (chorus), Carver (drum line), Kendrick (orchestra) and Columbus (chorus). Tenor Cy Dietrich will also perform from 6:45 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.

There will be a closing vigil at 8 p.m. and military fly-over at 8:15 p.m.

In conjunction with the activities at the Cunningham Center, CSU students will stage a brief “CSU Remembers” vigil at the clock tower starting at 11:55 a.m. and including a tolling of the tower bell at noon.

For more information about September 11 Remembrance Day, call the Cunningham Center at (706) 568-5101.
