Just as the day after Thanksgiving is known as Black Friday, the following Monday is known as Cyber Monday.

Coined in 2005, Cyber Monday is the day consumers head back to work and shop online. Like typical after-Thanksgiving retailers, "e-tailers" give internet buyers bargain prices on items that would normally be two to three times more expensive.

But as with any online buying, there are things you should know.

According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, make sure you purchase from a reputable source. If the site doesn't look secure, it probably isn't. Second, use a credit card. It's a much safer than a debit card and will give you a hard-copy statement for your records. Next, make sure to understand the terms of any deal. And finally, print the transaction information for your records.
