Authorities in Sumter County are looking for information that could lead them to the thieves who stole three dogs from a shelter over the weekend in Americus. It happened late Friday night or early Saturday morning at the Sumter Humane Society shelter on Magnolia street. This is the third time this year someone has broken into the Humane Society and stolen dogs. Laura Powell is angry and wants the thieves or thief responsible brought to Justice. She works at the shelter. Early Saturday morning someone cut the barbed wire fence then
climbed over and stole three dogs. Officials tell news three they think the thief wants to use the animals for dog fighting. The three dogs taken from the shelter were: a Bulldog, a pit mix and a German Shepherd mix. “It broke our hearts because its hard everytime they do it because we worry about whats happening to them after they're taken. We take them in and try to take care of them and these people come and take them and we're worried their being taken for the wrong reasons” Powell said. In addition to the dog stealing, Laura Powell says the thieves also broke into a cabinet and took dog food. But she says the bigger problem is the possibility that the criminals could be using these animals for illegal dog fights. Officials at the Humane Society say they are considering installing video cameras to help protect the building from crime. They are also hoping sometime next year to move into a new building that is totally enclosed. If have seen the two dogs that were taken, call the Sumter Humane society or the Americus police department.
