In just three days, a former Capitol Hill staffer will leave everything he knows to spend six months in a war zone.News 3 On Your Side
News 3 caught up with Army Reserve Lieutenent Colonel Robert Young Tuesday afternoon as he was doing some last minute preps before heading to Iraq.
He spent a year as a military liaison in Congressman Sanford Bishop's Washington Office. Young met with his old boss today, who was there to wish him well on his journey.
Young says he's looking forward to the challenge.
“I'm very excited about it. I think about my family and how much I'll miss them when I'm gone, but this is what I've trained to do for 20 years,” Young said.
Bishop said he was very proud of his former staffer.
“He's hardworking. He's serious, he's no nonsense, he loves the military. He respects the values of military service and of America,” Bishop said.
Young says the tough part will be leaving his family including five children. He'll take off on Friday, and will be back at the beginning of February.
