FORT BENNING, GA--Fort Benning's Western Hemisphere Institute For Security Cooperation, better known as WHINSEC has a new leader.

Colonel Felix Santiago took command this morning from Colonel Gilberto Perez. Santiago will be the third leader since the institute opened in 2001.

He comes to WHINSEC after serving as a commander in El Salvador. He admits, there will be challenges, but he's looking forward to beginning his career at WHINSEC.

“I look forward to meeting every member of the faculty and students of WHINSEC and integrate ourselves into the great communities of Phenix City, Columbus and Fort Benning,” Santiago said.

Santiago says he has some big shoes to fill taking over for Colonel Perez. No word yet on what Perez will do after retiring from the Army next month.
