Phenix City school officials are taking the next steps towards the new Freshman Academy. News 3 On Your Side
The Freshman Academy will be located next to Central High School and will house all of the 9th graders.
The Phenix City School Board will have a meeting on Friday to get bids for the new school.
The school district hopes to get a bid and approve it, all at that meeting.
The district estimates that the 70,000 square foot school will cost $10 to 12 million.
If they decide on a bid, the construction could start as early as next week.
“We know that if it comes in much more than 12 we're going to have a hard time but we've got some contingency plans, we may have to delay, perhaps, the kitchen part of it,” says Superintendent Larry DiChiara.
Dr. DiChiara says central high school has about 200 to 300 more students than they have room for.
He hopes to have the Freshman Academy open by the second semester of next school year.
Kendrick High School in Columbus has a similar program for their 9th graders but they are all in the same building.
