Monday marked the beginning of a 40-day session for the Georgia legislature. Representatives wasted no time in getting to work.

The beginning of this year’s session was as heated as the end of last year's session.

Before the morning was over, the house voted to override four of governor sonny Perdue’s vetoes. Many saw the overrides as a sort of response to Perdue’s veto of last year's mid-year budget.

Nonetheless, lawmakers are going forward with the four measures.

They include a measure that supporters say simplifies the approval process for kids seeking therapy. Another limits book allowances for recipients of the Hope Scholarship. A bill that gives tax refunds to companies that create tourist attractions is also back on the table. And finally, one that gives port guards status as certified peace officers.

The overrides are not a done deal. The measures must win two-thirds approval by the senate before they can take effect.

The session is far from over. On Wednesday, the governor will release his state budget proposal during his state of the state address before the house and senate. On Thursday, the state water plan will be presented to the legislature by the state water council.
