Parents at Wadell Elementary received a shocking phone call Monday evening. A loaded pistol was found in a kindergarten students bookbag this afternoon.News 3 On Your Side
Valerie Fuller, Spokesperson for Muscogee County School District says that a para professional was packing homework in the students book bags around dismissal time when she noticed the gun. She told the teacher and authorities were soon notified.
The district alerted parents with a recorded message via phone.
Columbus Police Captain J.D. Hawk says it was all an accident. He says the student's grandfather was in a hurry this morning, and accidentally stuffed the gun in the bookbag.
The man is facing a misdemeanor charge of reckless conduct.
Fuller says the district followed proper policy and procedure and classes will resume as scheduled on Tuesday.
