Just two days after being elected city councilor, an east Alabama man is behind bars, charged with rape and kidnapping. News 3 On Your Side
It was a city councilor who's served Lafayette, Alabama for the past four years and less than 48 hours ago, he was re-elected to serve his town again. But now, he’s serving time.
Toney Ben Thomas is charged with kidnapping, rape, assault and domestic violence.
It happened last week according to police. And Thursday afternoon, police arrested him.
News three was there as Thomas was ushered into the chambers county jail. Click on the video link to the right to see the exclusive video.
He had no comment for our cameras. An outside police department handled the case, the Roanoke Police Department.
Because the case involved a city official, Lafayette officials were not in charge of the investigation.
As for Thomas' future as a city councilor, the city clerk says, he is innocent until proven guilty.
That means that although he is behind bars, he is still a city councilor in Lafayette.
Thursday, Thomas he will go in front of a judge for a bond hearing.
