Yifem Leo has spent six years in Columbus. She is an accounting student at Columbus State University. Yifem says her family lives in South China and is safe.

Today's earthquake registered a 7.9 on the Richter scale.

Central China was the hardest hit, but reports say tremors were felt thousands of miles away in Beijing. In one province officials say as many as 80 percent of the buildings were destroyed.


Despite her distance from home, Yifem Liu says that no matter where she is, she will always feel united with her country and its native people. Yifem says she is already thinking of ways she can help victims of the devastation.

Officials in China say landslides and heavy rains are making recovery efforts difficult. Officials expect the death toll to rise as recovery efforts continue.
