It's Wednesday and that means it's time to honor a great teacher with the m-e-a golden apple award. News 3 On Your Side
This week's winner is Jessica Ross from Pine Ridge Elementary in Harris County.
Miss Ross' smile brings music to her student's ears...literally.
It’s all about having fun and getting the kids to love music for Miss Ross.
And that means getting them off their seats, moving around and singing.
“To me, it’s not only important for them to learn the elements of music, but at this age, it’s important to me that they learn to love music,” says Jessica Ross, a golden apple winner.
Just like she does.
Miss Ross makes music class a joy.
And it's not just contemporary music that these kids are learning to appreciate.
She helps kids understand the role music plays in their daily lives.
That's why she's this week's winner of the golden apple.
“She's really fun and I think she's the best music teacher we've had yet here,” says 4th grader, Dale Riley.
“She gets down on their level, she likes to dance with them, she'll sit on the floor with them, she plays games with them and that's something they really like,” says parent Jennifer Ritts.
It's clear that they have fun with her.
And she definitely has fun with them.
“I’m absolutely overwhelmed. in education and being a teacher, seriously, there are few times when you get recognized for all the hard work, and the background stuff that goes into it and the times in my life that I’ve been rewarded are when I see my kids perform and this, its amazing, I've never gotten any kind of reward before so its amazing,” says Miss Ross.
It's a reward she students say is well deserved.
Miss Ross also teaches the 4th and 5th grade chorus, where she has 105 students.
That's the highest she and the school have ever had in the chorus.
