It’s Wednesday and that means it’s time to honor a great teacher with the MEA Golden Apple Award. News 3 On Your Side
This week’s winner is Chris Register from Arnold Middle School in Columbus.
Mr. Register is more than just a great teacher to his students.
It was a normal day in Mr. Register’s science class until we shoed up to give him the golden apple award.
“Shocked and surprised, excited, it’s nice to be rewarded by the kids for the hard work you put into it,” says Chris Register, this week’s winner.
David King wanted to tell his teacher thanks.
So he nominated him for the award.
“I felt good about it, I felt like he deserved it,” says David King.
Mr. Register teaches science at Arnold Middle School.
He says he’s always been a science man and he wants his students to be too.
“A lot of these kids I'm trying to get them to understand that there is a life after high school, try to get them to a college where there is two, four year, graduate programs, whatever.
I want them to achieve what their potential can be,” says Register.
His students day he’s helping them reach that.
“Cause he's a great teacher and he taught us a lot,” says King.
“At the same time we're learning, we get to have fun and he jokes around with us and we play games to learn,” says student, Lachesica Evaus.
Games are something he knows well.
Coach Register, which is what all the students call him, is the assistant football coach, the head boy’s basketball coach and the athletic director.
He says he loves coaching but teaching is number one in his playbook.
“Teaching first, teaching first, always,” says Register.
“He's a great teacher and he was going to get recognized sooner or later,” says Evaus.
“To actually have a kid come out and say thank you for helping me, thanks for working with me, to me that's a blessing,” says Mr. Register.
Mr. Register says his goal for his students is to give them a solid science base so that they are prepared for high school and college science classes.
