New food service regulations are in effect for the state of Georgia.

News 3 first told you about the changes to Georgia’s food service safety standards nearly four months ago. At that time, many local restaurant workers welcomed the changes.

The number of food-born illnesses nationwide prompted Georgia’s Human Resources Department to up the state's standards.

News 3 is On Your Side with how these changes will impact your dinner table.

Under the new regulations, restaurants will receive a letter grade and numeric score for inspections.

In addition to that, there are more than 20 new rules including hand-washing changes. Employees must now wash their hands twice after using the restroom. They must also wear gloves OR use tongs or deli napkins when handling ready-to-eat foods like ice cream cones. And each restaurant is required to have a certified food safety manager.

The regulations took effect December 1.
