According to Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones, there have been a rash of car break-ins in Smiths Station over the past few weeks and that's why they pulled a car full of teenagers over early Wednesday morning.

Jones says a reserve deputy who is a full-time Lee County Correctional Officer, along with a Lee County Deputy pulled over the vehicle around 2:15 am. Jones says there were four people in the car, three males and in female. Three were teenagers. One male was 19 or 20.

Jones says it was the oldest male who shot the reserve deputy. At that point, Jones says the full-time deputy returned fire, striking the man. Jones says the victim's condition is unknown.

The reserve deputy was wearing a bullet-resistant vest, which is protocol, according to Jones. He suffered only minor injuries.

The deputy who fired shots is off the streets for now, according to Jones. The Sheriif's Department is investigating with the help of the Alabama Bureau of Investigation.
