Investigators in Russell County are looking for a man they say sexually assaulted a woman at her home then kidnapped her. Police say the crime happened early Thursday morning on County Line Lane in Crawford near Lee County. Many people living in the small town were shocked to learn that one of their neighbors was sexually assaulted in such a peaceful and quiet neighborhood. According to investigators, the victim was assaulted at gun point. Authorities say the suspect forced his way inside her house then raped her then kidnapped the woman and made the victim drive her own car while he sat in the back seat. The victim was actually able to jump out of the car and run away. Many folks like Jack Pickard who lives in the neighborhood still can't believe what happened.
"To me its very shocking, people are shook up. Most of the people around here are shook up" Pickard said. His neighbor Frank Mercer agrees. "And we haven't ever had anything like this happen here. Just shocked everybody". Investigators with the Russell County Sheriff's Office believe the suspect lives in the area where the crime happened. Police also suspect the man of scoping out the victims home before he allegedly committed the crime. Police say the car the suspect stole from the victim when he kidnapped her is a black PT Cruiser Limited Edition with a chrome grill with Alabama plates. The female victim was treated and released from the hospital. The suspect is still at large.
