The Phenix City Council is taking steps to crackdown on thieves who steal metal. Effective January first, all Phenix City junk or scrap metal businesses
will be required to keep track of all transactions involving people who sell them scrap metals. Phenix City Police Chief Brian McGarr hopes the ordinance will help cut down on thefts of metals. "Proper recording and reporting will deter taking in possible stolen scrap or stolen copper or different types of metals. And we want the junk dealers to work with us and help combat these thefts going on" says Chief McGarr. According to the law, businesses that buy brass, iron and copper to name a few will now have to file daily records of purchases electronically to the Police database.
