The thunderous sound of horses racing to benefit the arts means its time for the Steeplechase at Callaway Gardens. Saturday marked the 23rd running.
The bugler sounding his horn kicked off the eight steeplechase races that happened throughout the day, with a $215,000 total purse. The Steeplechase is more than a race, because profits from Saturday will benefit local art programs.
“A lot of programs for children, in fact the Symphony, they bus children from all over the Columbus and Harris County areas and they pay for the education of these kids. They expose them to symphonic music,” said Steeplechase Race Director, Jenny Adams.
The Steeplechase has earned a reputation throughout the years, drawing in high quality horses. The Steeplechase also boasts the fourth largest purse in the nation.
