When it comes to barbecuing, we grill more hamburgers than anything else. But one out of four of us is reaching for veggie burgers instead. Consumer Reports checked out a dozen veggie burgers and says nutritionally, they’re generally healthier. Veggie burgers have less fat and more fiber than hamburgers. A drawback? They also have more sodium.

The testers, who oversaw taste tests of veggie burgers, found something to suit just about any palate, even meat-lovers. If you like the taste of meat, the Boca Meatless Burgers All American Flame Grilled came pretty close. The taste testers say it could be mistaken for ground beef when eaten on a bun with condiments. And it has less than half the fat.

If you like vegetables, Dr. Praeger’s is worth trying. It’s moist and flavorful and full of colorful vegetables. Try the California Veggie Burger without a bun or condiments, which can overwhelm the flavor.

Prefer a veggie burger that’s somewhere in between? Try MorningStar Farms Garden Veggie Patties. They’re moist and flavorful.

Another benefit of veggie burgers, they have fewer calories than many hamburgers—typically around 100 calories a patty. All the veggie burgers Consumer Reports recommended cost about the same—around $1.00 a patty.
