We received a number of calls about teacher layoffs in Russell and Lee counties today asking why so close to the end of the school year?
As we told you earlier, due to budget cuts and a decline in enrollment both counties have to let teachers go.
We did some digging to find out why they are happening now.
The Lee County superintendent tells us they have to by state law.
They are required to let the teachers know their jobs will not be renewed on or before the last day of school.
If they do not notify by that time, the teacher is automatically rehired.
