You've probably seen a unique but fairly simple invention and thought to yourself…if only I would have come up with of that.News 3 On Your Side
That's exactly what folks are saying about a Lee County resident who, after racing cars and crashing, came up with a way for a speedy recovery.
“I got out there in the shop and started peddling around and got motor gas line, pipes and one thing lead to another,” says Scott Kay.
Scott Kay never imagined his idea would become such a hit.
In fact he didn't even think of it as much of an idea; it was just something to help him heal after shoulder surgery.
“I was just trying to benefit me and that was my main objective, I didn't know it would bring a benefit to anyone else,” says Kay.
He came up with a simple device designed to strengthen and stretch your shoulders.
It's called The Rotater and not only are other patients using it; professional athletes are catching on.
Players from the Detroit Lions, New York Giants and the Indianapolis Colts have all used Kay's invention.
And it's not just football.
“One athletic trainer said all my baseball players need it, then another one said all my swimmers need it and then all my volleyball players need it and it just mushroomed from there,” says Kay.
Initially it was for those going through rehab and then athletes and now it's reaching a group Kay never would have thought.
“This is ideal for breast cancer survivors because they have shoulder impairments after going through the breast cancer treatments, and we didn't know, I mean were mechanics,” says Kay.
So came the creation of the pink Rotater.
Whether it's pink, green or orange, Kay is still amazed that his backyard idea is making its way into other people's living rooms.
A plastics company out of Opelika makes the device and then they are sent out all across the world from Kay’s home.
