Good Housekeeping says you can save $14 a year if you swap just one regular light bulb for a compact fluorescent. Multiply that by all the bulbs in your home, and the savings can be pretty big.
Compact fluorescent bulbs do contain a small amount of mercury. So when you need to get rid of one or clean it up if it breaks, follow the Environmental Protection Agency’s directions. You can get them online at epa.gov/mercury/spills.
