An exotic animal is now calling Auburn home after being found on the side of an interstate earlier this week.News 3 On Your Side
The baby zebra was found on the side of Ii-75 just southeast of Atlanta near Locust Grove on Tuesday.
News Three's Kelly O’Connell went to Auburn to visit with the baby zebra and see how he's recovering from his surgery.
Meet “Evidence,” or as the vets at Auburn University call him, “Evy.”
He's the newest edition to their family.
At only 2 to 3 months old this baby is attracting a lot of attention.
“It was kind of surprising to be found by the road and no owner but we did have a little bit of experience with zebras,” says Dr. Huichu Lin at the Auburn College of Veterinary Medicine.
Even with some experience, it's not every day Dr. Lin sees wild animals, especially ones who are in a lot of pain.
The vets think “Evy” fell off a truck or tailor on the highway and was hit by another vehicle.
That's how he got his name - he was the only evidence at the scene.
When “Evidence” first came here he had a laceration on his stomach, it was 10 inches long and four inches deep.
After undergoing surgery, “Evidence” is making a come back.
“He has pulled through the initial stage, the most important stage and we are hoping he will keep doing better, doing better each day,” says Dr. Lin.
No one knows where Evy is from or who owns him.
“I don't think that anybody has called the police department to claim they loose a zebra,” jokes Dr. Lin.
It's hard to resist his cute face like this but Dr. Lin says it's really best if you do.
“Even though they are unique and interesting to have, it’s better just to leave them in the wild,” says Dr. Lin.
For now “Evy” will be resting up and soaking in his new found fame.
Dr. Lin and her staff treated "Evidence" like a horse.
Dr. Lin has treated many other wild animals.
She's worked on tigers, bears and even a rhinoceros.
His surgery costs about $5,000 and his care will cost more.
He will move to the animal rehabilitation center, Noah's Ark, within 2 to 4 weeks.
Noah's Ark is asking for donations for "Evidence."
