It didn’t take long for Auburn’s spring-practice depth chart at quarterback to return to full strength.auburnversus.com (a wrbl.com companion site)
A day after reserve quarterback Blake Field announced his plans to transfer to Valdosta State, a new quarterback appeared set to join the Tigers for spring practice.
Carver High School's Deron Furr, who committed to AU last June, told Auburnsports.com he planned to enroll at Auburn for the spring semester. Furr is expected to arrive Wednesday or Thursday, in time to begin classes.
If Furr is able to enroll in the spring, he will be eligible to participate in spring practice. That would give him a head start in learning coordinator Tony Franklin’s spread offense.
“I’m ready to get in the offense and learn the plays,” Furr told Auburnsports.com. “I think the spread offense is going to be real good for me. My athleticism should help me out a lot.”
Spring practice is scheduled to begin in late February.
The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Furr threw for 1,567 yards and 13 touchdowns and ran for 742 yards and 15 touchdowns while leading Carver to the AAA state title.
His teammate, wide receiver Jarmon Fortson, committed to Auburn last September and is expected to sign with the Tigers on National Signing Day, Feb. 6. Both Furr and Fortson are rated as four-star prospects by Rivals.com.
Furr’s arrival would give Auburn four scholarship quarterbacks on its spring roster. In addition to Furr, AU will bring in junior-college transfer Chris Todd, along with sophomores-to-be Kodi Burns and Neil Caudle.
A fifth quarterback, Barrett Trotter of Briarwood Christian, is expected to sign with Auburn in February. Trotter, a three-star prospect according to Rivals.com, will arrive on campus after the end of the spring semester.
