Tuesday night's clash of top-10 teams proved that it's not about how you start, but how you finish.News 3 On Your Side Sports
10th ranked Northside jumped out to twelve point lead on top-ranked Jordan, only to see the Jackets bounce back to pick up a 74-69 win over their cross-town rival.
The Patriots (5-1) got a large boost early in the contest from point guard Lamar Brown. Brown scored nine of his 11 points in the opening quarter, all of them from behind the 3-point line. Northside had a 12-8 lead midway through the period before finishing with a 12-7 run to take a 27-15 lead.
The momentum began to swing toward the home team early in the second quarter. Jackets' senior guard Terrence Hill got hot, tossing in a barrage of three pointers as Jordan (7-0) clawed its way back to trail by two at intermission. The Jackets took their first lead of the game two minutes into the 3rd period on a three-pointer by Hill. He led all scorers with 29 points on the night. Teammate Steve Peterson had 27.
Northside jumped back on top in the 4th quarter on a James Vincent dunk with four minutes to play. Jordan shut the door for good - retaking the lead about 30 seconds later and held on to win thanks to a slow-down offense and some timely free throw shooting in the final minutes.
Torin Walker led the Patriots with 20 points. Vincent added 15.
The game was a showcase, of sorts, for some of the senior players involved. A number of clooege coaches, including Auburn's Jeff Lebo, watched the game. Lebo says he's grown fond of recruiting in this area. "It's a perfect fit fo us because it's close to Auburn and some kids want to stay close to home. That's always a factor in making the colllege decision", says the AU coach. "
"There's some tremendous athletic ability in this area and we're always looking for great athletes. We've had some success here and will hopefully keep it going."
