Opelika, AL - Opelika head football coach, Spence McCracken, announced today that he will step down at the end of the upcoming season. He is the winningest active coach in Class 6A and retire as head coach and atheltic director but says he will stay on for a two more years to finish his teaching careerShawn Skillman
McCracken was inducted to Alabama High School Athletic Association's Hall Of Fame in 2004, and has a 272-76-1 overall record in 34 years of coaching. He came to Opelika in 1995 and has compiled a 122-32 record, reaching the semi-finals in 2005 and 2006. Opelika went 9-3 last year.
Most of McCracken's success was at his alma matter R.E. Lee in Montgomery. In 11 years he compiled a 118-25 record with the Generals including state titles in 1986, 1991 and 1992.
His 1986 team was ranked No. 2 in the nation and he was named National Coach of the Year by USA Today.
