CAIRO, Ga. (AP) - Carver quarterback DeRon Furr scored a 24-yard touchdown with 1:01 remaining to propel the Tigers to a 16-13 win over Cairo in the Class AAA final today.Associated Press
It was the first football state championship for Carver and capped a perfect 15-zero season.
The Tigers found themselves trailing with 3:11 to go after Cairo's Reginald Bryant scored a one-yard touchdown to give the Syrupmakers a 13-9 advantage.
Furr and the Tigers responded with a 10-play, 80-yard game-winning drive. Furr passed for 38 yards and rushed for 36 on the game-winning drive.
Carver jumped to a 9-0 lead at the half. Carlos Ross kicked a 30-yard field goal with 3:59 left in the first quarter, and Jarmon Fortson ran for a one-yard touchdown with 6:29 left in the half.
The Syrupmakers scored 13 unanswered points to take the lead, but they couldn't keep Carver out of the end zone.
Bryant led all rushers with 81 yards on 21 carries. Angelo Pease had 13 carries for 58 yards for Cairo.
Fortson led Carver with seven catches for 98 yards.
