Stumble It!He did just that today, shooting a 7-under-par 65 to win the individual crown and lead Alabama to its second Southeastern Conference golf championship, its first in 1979.
Thompson's outstanding finish on the par 72 Frederica Golf Club course at St. Simons Island, Georgia gave him an 8-under 208 total and a four-shot victory over teammate Joseph Sykora, who led after each of the first two rounds, and George Bryan IV of South Carolina. Sykora closed with a 71 and Bryan posted a 69.
The Crimson Tide walked away with the team title, posting a 13-under-par 275 in the final round for an 853 total - eight shots better than runnerup South Carolina. Next came Georgia at 862 followed by Florida 872, Mississippi State 878, Tennessee 881, Mississippi 884, LSU 888, Vanderbilt 890, Kentucky 893 and Auburn 897.
It was Thompson's first collegiate title in two seasons at Alabama, although he won four in his freshman and sophomore years at Tulane.
He says, "This one feels awesome. I couldn't have asked for anything better."
He birdied the first two holes, sinking a 50-foot putt on No. 2 that he said enabled him to ride the momentum the rest of the way.
