Rip currents are powerful, channelled currents of water that move away from the shoreline. They can be deadly and it is estimated that about 100 people in the United States die each year from rip currents. When planning a beach trip, choose an area that is officially designated as a beach that also has a lifeguard on duty. Also, swim with a buddy and learn if there are any dangerous currents in the forecast before you travel to the beach. If you do find yourself caught in a rip current, the most important thing is to remain calm. Do not fight the current and let it carry you away from the shore. Once the current starts to relax, swim out of it parallel to the shore. Eventually, make your way back to the beach. Call or wave for help if necessary.
