A viewer posed a tax question regarding ad valorem taxes in Georgia. They write please explain why we have an ad valorem tax, also why is it so high or costly.

An ad valorem tax is based on the value of your car and according to the Georgia Department of Revenue website it will not be collected more than once a year on one car. News 3 tried to speak with the Muscogee County Tax Commissioner but she was not able to make a comment today on the topic.

We did speak over the phone with the Harris County Tax Commissioner Sarah Mcdowel who says the state sets the formula and value of the car's worth. Those monies are then dispersed to the state, county, schools, and school bond. According to Phenix City Finance Director Steve smith -- Alabama also collects ad valorem taxes on cars on birthdays.
