Deadly Troup County car crash investigation leads to arrest of Columbus man

TROUP COUNTY, Ga. - Authorities have made an arrest after an investigation into a deadly car crash that occurred back on October 15, 2017.

According to Georgia State Patrol Master Trooper Dexster Cladd, warrants were issued January 19, 2018 for 31-year-old Christoper Berni of Columbus after the investigation by the Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team.

Berni was located in Columbus Thursday, February 1 by the U.S. Marshals and will be charged with two counts of homicide by vehicle first degree, endangerment of a child under age of 14 while DUI, serious injury by vehicle and failure to maintain a lane.

The investigation found that Berni was under the influence of a controlled substance.

After his arrest he was transported to the Troup County Jail.

As News 3 has reported, 29-year-old Cynthia Harris of Phenix City and a 1-year-old boy were killed in the accident that occurred on the on-ramp from Interstate 185 between exits 18 and 21 on Interstate 85 in Troup County.
