UPDATE: Hurtsboro diner owner dead; three others injured after shooting

The suspect in the shooting has been identified as 64-year-old Walter Frank Thomas.

He will be charged with one count of murder and three counts of attempted murder in Hurtsboro shooting.

UPDATE: 03/07/18 11:05 a.m.

A shooting inside a Hurtsboro diner kills the 69-year-old owner, Donnie Hughes and injures three others.

Sheriff Heath Taylor is calling it a tragedy for the small town, saying the owner is a beloved member of the community who operated the City Grill Cafe along Main Street. The Hughes family opened the gril in 1954.

The shooter has an alleged history of mental illness and was taken into custody at his home, nearby. The suspect's name is not being released.

Sheriff Taylor says the shooting occurred at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.

The three injured where transported to a local hospital.

HURTSBORO, Ala. -- A standoff underway in Russell County on Goolsby Street.

Investigators say the suspect shot multiple people, killing at least one person, at the nearby City Grill.

Investigators also say the suspect then ran to a home on Goolsby Street, where the standoff continues.
