COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Columbus police are investigating a deadly shooting in south Columbus Monday evening.

Police say one man has been shot and killed by a Columbus Police officer on Ramsey Road.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirms Columbus Police have requested their efforts to investigate the deadly officer-involved shooting.

Columbus Police Chief Ricky Boren tells News 3 that officers were called out to a home on Ramsey Road for a domestic disturbance.  There, they found a couple believed to be a husband and wife fighting.

The woman was taken outside and placed in the back of a patrol car. When officers ran a check on the man, they found out he was wanted in Texas on felony warrants of methamphetamine possession.

Boren says when officers tried to arrest the man, he began to fight them.  He says officers tasered the man to the floor, but he seemed unaffected.  He says the suspect proceeded to pick up a chair and struck one of the officers with it.

Boren says the man then reached into a box for what appeared to be a gun.  At that time, Boren says one of the other officers fired one shot, which struck the man.

Chief Deputy Coroner Freeman Worley confirms to News 3 that the man did die of a gunshot wound.  The man's name has not been released at this time.

The GBI has now taken over the investigation.
