Former football coach of arrested Tuskegee Assistant Coach says he is shocked to hear of charges

PHENIX CITY, Ala (WRBL) - A Central High School coach says he is shocked after the Tuskegee Assistant Football coach and one of his former players is facing federal drug and gun charges.

Coach Charles Fortune says Ramone Nickerson was an excellent student and athlete who set high standards and met goals.

"He was a very good athlete and he was a very good person when he was in school, he was always trying to help, you know he was very manageable, like I said, he was just a very good, well-rounded person."

Nickerson graduated from Central High School in Phenix CIty and went on to play football at Tuskegee University, where he was coaching before being arrested Wednesday.

"That wasn't the person that I know," says Fortune.

Fortune says Nickerson’s arrest was unexpected, and recalls him being a leader while at CHS.

"He was a leader while he was here. He was one of those individuals that you knew was going to give his all, you know, and he, his desire to win made things a lot easier for him, because it made him work harder."

Fortune says he hopes Nickerson is proven innocent, and says he is praying for the best.
