HURTSBORO: Grieving process continues following deadly shooting

On Saturday, Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor confirmed that John Williams passed away following the shooting at the City Grill Café, Wednesday, March 7. Williams had been in critical condition following the shooting.

The announcement of Williams' passing came the day after Hurtsboro residents held a vigil at St. Paul AME Church for Donnie Hughes.

Hughes was the owner of City Grill Cafe, which had been owned by his mother before him since 1954.

Investigators say the suspect, 64 year old, Thomas Walker entered the City Grill Cafe and shouted Hughes' name before multiple shots from a .22 caliber rifle into the restaurant. Hughes was pronounced dead at the scene, Williams and two others were wounded.

RCSO has confirmed that Walker has a history of mental illness, and was not allowed to own a gun. They are looking into how he came in to possession of the firearm.

With the passing of Williams on Saturday, Walker could now be charged with capital murder.
