New autism wing opens at Double Churches Middle School

The million dollar project serves all children on the autism spectrum.

Columbus, Ga- It's been years in the making, but for one amazing group of students at Double Churches Middle School-the time has come. A new wing specializing in educating students with autism is now up and running.

With hundreds of kids in the Muscogee County School District on the autism spectrum, the recent ribbon cutting for the 1 million dollar autism wing at Double Churches Middle School goes the extra mile towards enriching the lives of these incredible students.

With 8 classrooms and 4 observation rooms, Learning Specialist Monica Watkin tells News 3 that the new facility provides limitless opportunity.

"We're able to kind of move them back and forth from maybe a couple of classes in my classroom and a couple of classes in another classroom, where they might be getting a little bit more support than they need. So it really gives our students an opportunity to flourish and be in their least restrictive environment," says Watkin.

Students will also benefit from having a space dedicated solely to physical therapy. The new wing at Double Churches Middle School opens as Autism Awareness Month is being celebrated across the U.S..
