Possible lottery coming to Alabama

ALABAMA - Could a lottery be coming to Alabama?

Lawmakers in the Senate considered a bill Wednesday that would establish a lottery in the state. There is skepticism that any lottery bill could be enacted during this election year, but the bill did receive support in committee --which is rare.

The bill's sponsor says this is the exact time lawmakers should be considering a lottery as there's no urgent need to supplement the budget, but opponents still stand firmly against it.

Senators Paul Sandford said his lottery bill could generate 45 to 50 million dollars annually for the state. However, opponents say a lottery will not have the intended effect.
