SAFEST CITIES: Auburn recognized as one of Alabama's safest cities

AUBURN, Ala (WRBL) - When it comes to safety Auburn, Alabama is rising in the ranks.

Auburn has been recognized as one of Alabama's safest cities.

Auburn went from number 20 to number 7 on the National Council for Home Safety and Security's (NCHSS) 2018 list of Safest Cities in Alabama.

David Dorton, Director of Public Affairs, says cities were evaluated based on the number of reported violent crimes and property crimes per 1000 people.

Auburn is the largest of the cities listed on the ranking. Auburn had 3.29 violent crimes per 1000 people in 2018 and 17.61 property crimes per 1000 people.

The City of Auburn says, "The NCHSS compiled data from the most recent FBI Uniform Crime report and its own population data and internal research to rank Alabama cities, excluding those with populations under 10,000 and those that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI.
