Two children drown on West Point Lake Sunday

TROUP COUNTY, Ga. -- Troup County officials are mourning the loss of two children, after they reportedly drowned Sunday afternoon.

The Troup County Sheriff's Office tells News 3 both children were 12 years old. Witnesses say the children, one boy and one girl, went into West Point Lake at Earl Cook Beach around 4:15 p.m.

Witnesses add the two went underwater while swimming and did not resurface. Deputies, as well as dive teams and crew members of Troup County Fire and EMS scoured the lake for about three hours to try and find the children. Crews eventually recovered their bodies in the lake Sunday around 7:30 p.m.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the US Army Corp of Engineers, and the LaGrange Police Department also helped in the search for the two children's bodies. Officials say the children were from Atlanta, visiting West Point Lake with family.

Officials say they send their thoughts and prayers to the family members and friends of the drowned children. Stay with News 3 for more details on this story.
