WATCH OUT: Columbus Police gives more than 100 citations in a distracted driving sting

COLUMBUS, Ga (WRBL) - COLUMBUS, Ga (WRBL) --Lieutenant Thomas Dent, of the Columbus Police Department, tells New's 3 police were on the lookout for distracted drivers Wednesday morning in a sting.

Lt. Dent says officers from the department were in plain clothes and some were posing as construction workers who called and relayed information to other officers who would then catch distracted drivers in the act.

He says they issued 111 citations, and 30 were for distracting driving. Lt. Dent says they also arrested three people.

CPD patrolled along both Bradley Park Drive and the intersection of Veteran Parkway and 13th Street.

Dent says distracted driving is one of the number one causes of fatalities on Georgia highways. He says picking up a phone behind the wheel can be even more dangerous than driving drunk. He says he hopes these distracted driving stings will cause people to think twice before picking up a phone behind the wheel.
