Columbus native Colby Rasmus signs with Baltimore Orioles

BALTIMORE, Md. - Columbus, Georgia native Colby Rasmus is back in professional baseball.'s Mark Feinsand first reported that Rasmus has signed a one-year minor league deal with the Baltimore Orioles.

Rasmus stepped away from baseball in 2017 after playing just 37 games with the Tampa Bay Rays, citing personal reasons after dealing with a hip injury that forced him to begin the season on the disabled list.

The 31 year-old came off of the DL in May, but returned in June, and was placed on the restricted list after making his decision to leave the game in July.

Rasmus is expected to compete for the starting job in left field for the Orioles. He has played for the Toronto Blue Jays, St. Louis Cardinals and Houston Astros in addition to the Rays during his nine year MLB career.

The left-hander has a .242 batting average, 165 home runs and 490 RBIs during his MLB career.

Rasmus was a part of the 1999 Little League World Series United States championship team from Phenix City.
