Columbus Cottonmouths ready for 2016/17 hockey season

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Columbus Cottonmouths head coach and general manager Jerome Bechard says he still gets the same excitement and feelings he did as a kid on opening day of hockey season. Bechard and the Cottonmouths opened training camp on Tuesday at the Columbus Ice Rink for the 21st season of professional hockey in Columbus, Georgia.

Training camp will be intense as the Snakes only have nine days, including a pair of exhibition games, before the regular season begins October 21 on the road against the Macon Mayhem. Columbus will play their home opener on Oct. 22 against Macon at the Columbus Civic Center at 7:30 pm.

The team opens camp with 19 players on the roster, including goaltender Brandon Jaeger and captain Kyle Johnson. Bechard says he expects to add four of five more players once teams in other leagues make their cuts. You can find the current Cottonmouths roster here.

Columbus is looking to bounce back after a disappointing 2015/16 season, missing the playoffs for the first time since joining the SPHL in 2004/05.
