MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - An Alabama congresswoman says new data shows patient schedules were routinely manipulated at Veterans Affairs medical facilities in central Alabama. The VA has released data to Congress showing 57 percent of the staff surveyed at Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System said they were instructed to change appointment dates.

DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - Gov. Robert Bentley says he's chosen a successor to Houston County Sheriff Andy Hughes, who is taking a post as the state's assistant director of homeland security. Bentley says he has tapped the county's deputy sheriff, Donald Valenza, to replace the outgoing sheriff.

SMITHS STATION, Ala. (AP) - An east Alabama high school teacher whose SUV was hit by a train near the school is recovering and hospital officials say she doesn't appear to have any serious injuries. Science teacher Vivian Martin was flown to a medical center in Columbus, Georgia, after Monday's accident and is listed in satisfactory condition.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Officials say a 49-yea-rold Alabama woman who was doused in gasoline and lit on fire by her ex-boyfriend has died. Jefferson County sheriff's spokesman Randy Christian says Deborah Diane Prater died early Tuesday in a hospital where she has been since the attack Sunday morning.
